Kamale Ngoni
Also known as a young man's harp, these bridge harps are derived from a simpler hunter’s harp, the Donso Ngoni
They are traditionally played by Wasulou musicians from Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea.
Nowadays, they are played in traditional and popular music across West Africa.
Kamale Ngoni are usually tuned in a pentatonic scale and instruments might have between eight and sixteen strings.
I use goat skins that are fairly traded from suppliers in Pakistan.
The calabash are sourced from Niger, Mali or Burkina Faso.
I predominantly use reclaimed UK grown oak for the necks, handles and bridges.
